The giant rooster in Gulick Park
If you like Pablo Picasso‘s art works, come to Gulick Park in Goodland to see the Picasso-like “The Big Rooster” by local artist Brian Freeman. Freeman painted the canvas when it had already been mounted on the easel, a technique called en plein aire. “Rooster” was the first painting in Goodland’s Art in the Parks program started by Goodland’s Carnegie Arts Center.
Also enjoy the gardens maintained by the local Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) and Sherman County Master Gardeners. Park is at Ninth and Caldwell.
Each spring, Goodland High School band holds a concert in the park.
Freeman is also associated with another public artwork in Goodland. He commissioned Laurie Albin to paint a mural, “Bygone Days on the Bricks”. That building now houses On the Bricks Cafe.
The easiest way to view all the paintings on their easels is to start at the van Gogh Project painting and go northeast to Chambers Park for “Picnic in the Park“; Gulick Park for “The Big Rooster” and finally Rosewood Park for “Arapahoe Sun”.
